Research in this project area has spanned a wide range of topics, all of which have been concerned with the ways that technology and its innovation link to the manufacturing process and firm competitiveness. Some of the key findings have involved benchmarking performance at the plant level based on detailed surveys of technology and efficiency in plants in the United States and abroad. The productivity of steel firms and comparisons of productivity among firms also have been a major focus of research. The current research agenda of the working group is organized in four primary areas: (1) Sources and the role of universities in innovation, (2) Theoretical energy requirements for producing steel, (3) Steel-plant Û steel-supplier relationships, and (4) Decision making and structure of R & D.
