Based on data collected from extended visits to scores of steel plants, research by this working group has carefully examined the linkages between human resource management (HRM) practices and the performance of production lines. Earlier findings from this research established that the adoption of modern HRM practices has a measurable and important effect on production-line productivity. The current research agenda of this working group continues and extends this line of inquiry and also goes on to examine issues related to labor market outcomes in the steel industry. There are five ongoing projects: (1) What makes high performance mills different? (2) Learning curves in the steel industry, (3) Production line performance in steel minimills, (4) The effects of information technology and HRM practices on employment and wages, and (5) Changes in steel industry employment: Implications for income inequality.
